The 2012 Designer of the Year, Legend Award, and Interiors Awards

Designer of the Year: MASS Design Group

The 33rd Annual Interiors Awards

The Interiors Awards offers recognition in an array of market segments and is the only juried program to offer recognition of design by category. Held since 1979, the competition is judged by a select group of respected design industry leaders.

Jurors said, "Many of these projects were commissioned in the midst of the greatest financial crisis in our lifetimes. These designers persevered and delivered. We’re excited to see what this means for our profession going forward. We hope this is a sign that innovation is still alive.”

With this joint statement, the jurors encapsulated their sense that the projects selected as winners in Contract magazine’s 33rd Annual Interiors Awards are remarkable given their place in time. Designers know that the past three years have been difficult economically. To complete a project beautifully, with a richness in detail on a tight budget , and to do so fully responding to a client’s program, is all the more challenging today. The jurors—Primo Orpilla (2011 Designer of the Year), James Prendergast, Viveca Bissonnette, Carolyn Iu (1997 Designer of the Year), and Lance Amato—recognized that and were able to deftly distill the best work of their peers from nearly 500 submissions.
A winning project was selected in each of 13 categories, including one project in Toronto, three in New York, three in California, and one by students. Three projects from China were chosen, all designed by Chinese firms. Large firms are represented—Perkins+Will won for a large office project in Chicago—but the majority of projects were by small- or medium-sized firms. Great design was, of course, the key determining factor for the jurors, and clearly firms of various sizes—not just large firms—were able to complete fantastic work in a time of economic uncertainty.
“A number of these winning projects seem timeless, and that is why they were selected,”
the jurors said. “All of them are conceptually strong and fluid. They tend to be very holistic executions of a concept, and there’s a narrative in each one.”
