The government of the Republic of Chad has selected the Washington,
D.C. office of Leo A Daly to provide architectural,
engineering and landscape design for its new embassy. The project
involves complete renovation of a 40-year-old building on
Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C.
"Our extensive experience with embassy design, coupled with our
ability to provide not only architecture, but also engineering,
interior and landscape design services, makes us the perfect
candidate for this project," says Alan Feltoon, managing principal
for the Leo A Daly Washington, D.C. office.
The goal of the project is to modernize the interior, exterior and
landscape of the building, built in the 1960s, which comprises
approximately 8,300 sq. ft. of three equally sized floors above
ground, a full basement and a mechanical penthouse. Leo A Daly will
complete the restoration in two phases.
All floors will be renovated to create meeting and office space, as
well as the Ambassador's suite. Sustainable interior finishes,
lighting and tailored detailing augmented by craft and art pieces
from Chad will complete the diplomatic setting of the new
embassy.
In addition to a new layout addressing the diplomatic functions,
the ceiling will be replaced to incorporate new heating and cooling
equipment, air distribution systems, fire alarm system, lighting
and data cable distribution. State-of-the-art communications and
security systems also will be integrated throughout the
facility.
The renovation includes an enhanced building exterior to allow for
a greater presence, while maintaining its current architectural
character. To achieve this goal, the exterior will be refurbished
to include a three-story high window prominently placed above the
entrance vestibule. The landscape also will receive treatment as
part of the second phase of renovation, including repair of stone
work at the front steps and a new walkway from the street.
The project further includes a gallery space located at the
entrance. It will exhibit the planned renovation of the building
and provide information to visitors about the Republic of Chad.
