The Viacom Cafeteria

New York-based Gerner, Kronick + Valcarcel, Architects, PC has completed construction on the Viacom cafeteria and Paramount screening room, both located at the Viacom 1515 Broadway headquarters in New York City. Viacom is the parent company for MTVN Networks, BET Networks and Paramount Pictures Corporation.

The cafeteria and servery is also used for events, dinners, and parties. The remodel focused on refreshing the space, adding a large conference room and meeting room putting the end result at 12,000 sq. ft.

"This project highlights many of the things we do best as a firm: the ability to formulate and implement an architectural and design plan within a rapid-fire turnaround time," says Richard Kronick, principal, GKV Architects.

An 8-ft. by 8-ft. projection screen broadcasting MTVN Networks channels 24 hours a day was incorporated into a metal and glass partition system coated in blue 3M film. The partition glows and the projection screen is viewable from both sides. A lounge room was also added, outfitted with a white pool table and featuring a bocce ball light fixture. In the dining room, intermittent pin lights flutter down the walls. Silver beads were also hung from the ceiling behind the banquet.

The screening room project included changes to both the lobby prefunction space and the actual screening room. Graphics depicting classic Paramount film moments clad the wall and a red carpet accent strip runs continuously throughout the project, directing visitors to the screening room.

In the entry corridor, GKV attempted to replicate a monumental filmstrip by framing recessed LCD screens with millwork details. The prefunction space, as well as the screening room feature chairs upholstered in mohair. The prefunction space also is sheathed in double height silver fabric window treatments that allow in daylight and reflect the down lighting at night.
