Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects (GSAA) announced August 31 the completion of its design for the new Student Center for Cleveland State University. Located in downtown Cleveland, the 138,000-sq.-ft. facility builds upon the school’s urban profile, while boasting a contemporary aesthetic, to create a more integrated relationship between the school and its home metro.
“We think of a student center as the ‘living room’ of a campus,” says GSAA principal Robert Siegel.
The three-story Student Center features a bookstore, dining options, student lounge, computer access, as well as offices for student activities and conference rooms. The central atrium—adorned with articulated granite and brick walls, as well as aluminum windows—boasts a sky-lit, circulation layout with activity space to encourage open communication within. Pedestrian skybridges connect the facility to the main campus plaza and academic buildings and below-grade parking access. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s Euclid Corridor Transportation Project, also designed by GSAA, coincides with the Student Center’s completion, offering public transportation access right outside the Center’s entry plaza for convenient accessibility to downtown Cleveland.
