Architecture firm Cox Richardson’s latest project involves a masterful interior re-design of the Parkside Convention Centre in Sydney, Australia, which features decor inspired by the surrounding ocean views of Darling Harbor.
Nature plays an important role in the new design: natural light infuses the space with freshness, while the colors mimic the nearby sea. The foyer even features an immense glass wall for views over Cockle Bay, along with white travertine floors, deep blue carpets, and color-backed glass wall panels.
Local artwork also receives a tribute: an harbor scene by Australian artist Brett Whiteley acts as a focal point to the center's open spaces, and his "Sydney Harbour to the Spirit of Bill W" adorns the wide concourse of the Convention Centre. The center's collection features over 20 other works by Australia's foremost artists.
“The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre has always been more than just a static venue: it links its events with the life and energy of Sydney itself,” says Parkside Convention Centre chief executive Ton van Amerongen in a statement. “These changes further enhance that quality, drawing on the vivid light, the water views and the surrounding life of Darling Harbour.”
The new design also includes integrating projection screens and digital display systems, part of a masterplan for increased flexibility and exhibition space. The center will soon add fully-operable walls as the next stage in the plan.
Final renovations to the design should be complete by the end of this year.
