The Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, is a modern facility that draws inspiration from the surrounding Pocono Mountains. Connected by skywalk to the existing medical center, the new cancer center (cover feature, Contract, October 2012) is designed by EwingCole to be contemporary and timeless in a rural setting.
The 65,000-square-foot building has an L-shaped form surrounding two sides of a landscaped courtyard. Main circulation spaces gently curve in plan, recalling the topography of hills. On the exterior, the glass and taut, orthogonal, white metal insulated panels contrast with the organic, sinuous garden. This comprehensive cancer center includes twenty chemotherapy infusion stations, two linear accelerator vaults, a pharmacy, CT simulator and PET/CT, a cafe, meditation room, and conference spaces.
A three-story lobby, which narrows and then opens broadly to a view of the courtyard, is a metaphor for the compressed spaces between mountains that open to great expanses in the Poconos. Elements of texture and nature enliven an otherwise smooth, white modernist interior. Along the lobby, a screening element of reconstituted wood and acrylic adds warmth, layers of texture, and provides privacy for patients in adjacent treatment areas. The client worked closely with EwingCole to bring forth design ideas such as the screening elements, a water feature in the lobby, and the overall openness of the glazing.
