The Jean Coutu pharmacy, designed by Quebec-based Groupe Chagall Design, is situated in downtown Montreal. The store features walls covered in waves, light flowing down from the ceiling, and large, stream-like structures adorning the ceiling—all elements created by Chagall’s designers and artists to complement the space’s over-arching water concept.

Several architectural issues were inherent to the stairs, forcing the designers to come up with bold, innovative solutions. In order to guide customers toward the stairs, the design team made use of a ceiling detail that created the illusion of movement. |

Structural limitations made it impossible to fully open up the first floor; therefore, the layout had to be designed to make it easy for customers to circulate through the pharmacy and to make the dividing wall fit in with the rest of the decor. |
