Before pair matching the test and control groups, Physician’s Estimate of Mortality Risk (PEMR) groups 1 (low risk) and 4 (high risk) were disproportionately represented in the Open Bay and Private Room subject groups. After pair matching, all illness severity categories were equally represented in both study groups, making comparisons possible and final conclusions more reliable. |

Subject experiential biases were seen in healthcare staff groupings after survey analysis. Nurses preferred the open bay unit in every aspect except for noise levels, privacy and light control. Medical doctors and nurse practitioners preferred the private room facility with regards to all but patient care issues, which they rated as similar in both facility designs. |
