MASS Design Group Nominated for Aga Khan Architecture Award

02 May, 2013

A project by MASS Design Group, Contract’s 2012 Designer of the Year, has made the shortlist of 20 entries for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which comes with a $1 million prize. The firm designed the Umubano Primary School in Rwanda, comprising seven buildings that blend interior rooms, exterior teaching areas, and terraced play spaces on a sloping site. MASS Design Group employed local materials such as brick and bamboo, as well as shading and natural ventilation to reduce energy consumption. The school’s curriculum has been developed to provide education for more than 300 vulnerable or orphaned children.

The Aga Khan Award honors projects every three years that not only exhibit architectural excellence but also improve quality of life. A group of architects, urban planners, and engineers is reviewing the projects before submitting them to the master jury. The jury will then select five or six finalist to be announced at a ceremony in Lisbon in September.
