Richard Meier & Partners Architects have completed 230 Halsey Street, an education building that is part of the Teachers Village mixed-use development in Newark, New Jersey. The four-story, 90,000-square-foot structure—featuring interiors designed by Princeton-based KSS Architects—houses two charter schools, a basketball court, fitness room, and ground-floor retail space.
White metal panels and iron spot brick form the exterior. “Natural light has been an important consideration, and all the different classrooms and commercial spaces on the ground floor will be full of natural light with various views to the neighborhood,” managing partner Richard Meier said in a statement.
The Teachers Village will comprise another charter school, a daycare center, small- to mid-scale retail, and 200 residential units for educators. The development will seek LEED Neighborhood Development designation.
