The Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) will host A Confederacy of Heretics: The Architecture Gallery, Venice, 1979
, a recreation of the galleries staged in the home of architect Thom Mayne in 1979. During that time, he arranged 10 weekly exhibitions of both new and renowned Los Angeles practitioners including Eric Owen Moss, Craig Hodgetts, Robert Mangurian, Frederick Fisher, Roland Coate Jr., Michael Rotondi, and Eugene Kupper. Presenting artifacts from Mayne's Architecture Gallery
collectively for the first time in more than 30 years aims to provide a unique view into some of L.A.’s most influential architects of the late 20th century.
Running from March 29- July 7, A Confederacy of Heretics
is curated by Todd Gannon, Ewan Branda, and Andrew Zago, and designed by Zago Architecture. The exhibition will include models of Eric Owen Moss’s Morganstern Warehouse, multimedia studies of studies of Frederick Fisher’s Caplan House and Observatory, drawings and models of Studio Works’ South Side Settlement House and Nicolet Island project. Many objects have not been shown since 1979.
Lectures open to the public include "Prelude to the Confederacy" by architect and writer Todd Gannon; an exhibition discussion with Eric Owen Moss and the exhibition’s curators; and a symposium with Architecture Gallery
